Writing and Greathites
As I said writing is my first love. It is what I would do for the rest of my life, if I were independently wealthy and didn’t have a family to worry about. Ok, that and ski the Alps. But I do have to make money and I do have a family that I love dearly so, writing is a side thing that I do.
For many years after college I didn’t write much at all. A few short stories, a few longer ones but nothing I would really want to share with anyone other than family members.
Then in 2006 I changed jobs. My new job and the new place that we moved (farm country in upstate New York) were both slower paced. It opened up some possibilities for me, one of those was GreatHites.
what is greathites?
Great Hites is simple, great stories written every week. In the beginning I was the only one writing stories, but that was no fun. So I changed the format to a weekly prompt based short story contest.
Obviously the name of the site is a play on my own name, and the idea that I wanted to write great stories. So we have Great Hites.
Every week you will get a new prompt, or a challenge at the beginning of the week, you have one week to write a story about that topic, and send it and a recording of it to me. Then I will post the story.
Why? Why do I think this is a good idea. Well for one thing it is fun to do. I enjoy the challenge of writing a story under a deadline. I think other people do too. These stories are not perfect, but I can honestly say that I have not really seen many (if any) bad stories. The other reason is that this gives me, and everyone else who participates some practice. Next, I have hopes that this will help some of the writers get noticed. There are many many great stories here, and I think that the writers of these stores deserve to be noticed. Last, because it is fun. This is a challenge for me, and I like that, and it is a lot of fun to see what other people come up with.
